As at May 1, Barbados has recorded at least 23 homicides for 2026.
Looking at the January to April period across prior years, this is the highest number recorded for that timeframe since at least 2014 (the beginning of my data set), slightly above 2019 which recorded 22.
What stands out to me is the apparent pattern over the last few years. From 2023 onward, the early-year figures have moved as follows:
- 2023: 6
- 2024: 10
- 2025: 17
- 2026: 23
There are also years that sit outside of this pattern. For example, 2021 recorded 3 homicides in this period, possibly influenced by COVID-related restrictions at the time.
If the current pace continues, 2026 may end the year higher than recent totals. It is still early in the year, so how the rest of the months unfold will ultimately determine where things land.
As always, these figures are not official, but are based on data collected from established media reports, police updates, and other publicly available sources, using a consistent methodology over time.
