
Retired physical education teacher and sports official Janita Austin was seriously injured in a robbery near Heywoods, St. Peter on Saturday night (June 14th). The attack occurred after she got off a bus in Speightstown, when she was reportedly approached by a man with a machete. Austin sustained a serious leg injury and underwent surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
A respected figure in Barbados’ sporting community, Austin had just finished volunteering at a track meet at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex. The incident has shocked many, including fellow physical education teacher Alwyn Babb, who called for solutions to the rising crime.
Police have not yet released details about the incident.
