An 83-year-old woman in St. Michael was the latest victim in a disturbing series of attacks targeting elderly Barbadians. On Saturday night (June 28th), a gunman attempted to enter her home, pointing a firearm and demanding she turn off the lights and television. Fortunately, the woman escaped unharmed after calling police, but the gunman fled before they arrived.
This marks the second time in under two years that she has faced such terror. Her story adds to a growing trend of violent incidents against seniors, including recent attacks on a 99-year-old newspaper vendor, a 76-year-old woman who was raped, and others who were robbed or assaulted—often in their own homes or communities.
Residents in affected areas are reporting increased lawlessness, including theft, home invasions, and night-time stoning of rooftops. Many are calling for basic interventions like improved street lighting.
Leaders from both the Barbados Association of Retired Persons and the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs have condemned the surge in violence, calling for urgent legislative and societal responses to protect the island’s vulnerable elderly population.
