One of the advantages of maintaining a growing dataset — covering homicides in Barbados from 2016 to 2025, with over 300 recorded cases — is that it allows me to explore patterns and ask deeper questions.
Take June 2025, for example. With nine recorded murders, it immediately stood out. That led me to ask: Have we seen this level of homicides before, and also, what is the average amount of homicides (I have January 2016 to June 2025, 114 months with a total of 332 homicides).
A few queries of the database quickly gave me the answer. Only two other months — January 2019 and June 2024 — have ever recorded nine homicides. That makes June 2025 the third time in ten years that Barbados has reached this number. With a monthly average of 2.9 homicides, those three months saw more than triple the usual level of deadly violence.
I’ll continue to monitor and analyze the data to help answer some of those questions. In the meantime, you can explore monthly and yearly homicide trends for yourself on the Barbados Homicide Dashboard, which lets you filter by time period, method, parish, gender, and more.
